The Karthika Deepam March 16 episode delivered the kind of sustained emotional pressure that the serial does best — a family unraveling in real time, accusations flying across every room, a mother weeping in front of a daughter-in-law who cannot explain herself, and at the centre of it all, a secret so devastating that the two people carrying it can only hold each other and endure. Monday’s episode was one of the heaviest the show has produced in weeks.
Parijatam’s Revelation Hits Kanchana Like a Thunderbolt
The episode picks up from where things left off — Parijatam has just told Kanchana that Dasharath already knew Deepa did not want to continue the pregnancy. The reaction is immediate and visceral. Kanchana cannot process the idea that her brother, who she trusted completely, had this information and said nothing. She confronts him with the full weight of her hurt: “You knew everything and still let me be deceived, anna?”
While the confrontation with Dasharath plays out, Parijatam’s mind is running on a different track. She is watching Jyotsna carefully — and something in Jyotsna’s behaviour tells her the hatred for Deepa runs deeper than this situation. “She has something else against Deepa,” Parijatam tells herself. “I need to find out what it is.” Parijatam’s quiet suspicion becomes the episode’s slow-burning undercurrent.
Jyotsna Starts the Fire in Sumitra’s Room
The scene shifts to Sumitra’s room. Deepa, Karthik, and Dasharath arrive together. Sumitra, still fragile, asks Deepa why she has been moving around in her condition — a mother-in-law’s concern, worried about the baby and the pregnancy. Deepa responds gently, pouring her a glass of water. For a brief moment the room feels almost calm.
Then Jyotsna walks in.
She addresses Sumitra directly, making sure the words land in front of everyone: the baby has become a burden to Deepa, she announces. Deepa’s own child is an inconvenience. Selfish ambition comes before the life of an unborn child. Jyotsna delivers each accusation with calculated venom, framing it as concern for Sumitra while twisting the knife into Deepa with every sentence.
Karthik’s Counter — and the Weight of the Past
Karthik has heard enough. He steps forward and tells Jyotsna with cold clarity to control herself: this is between him and his wife, it is entirely their private matter, and they owe no one in this room an explanation.
Jyotsna does not back down. She escalates — dragging up Deepa’s past, the old accusation that Deepa once tried to have their father killed, the question of how a family could welcome such a person back through their doors without shame. And now this same woman wants to discard her own child.
Karthik’s response is to go to the same dark place she went to. He brings up the agreement that kept Deepa in the house — who engineered that, he asks. He mentions car accidents and lorry collisions and asks whose habit it has been to resort to violence. Across the room, Parijatam goes pale. The past lands on her like a physical blow. She was part of those schemes, and hearing Karthik name them aloud is its own kind of punishment.
Sumitra’s Breakdown — a Mother Speaking to a Mother
Amid the crossfire, Sumitra breaks. She is not angry — she is devastated. She turns to Deepa with tears running openly and asks the question that no one else has asked plainly: “How did your heart agree to this? I am asking you as a mother. Carrying a child — how does that become a burden?”
She tells Deepa about Jyotsna — her own daughter, her reason for living. If anyone tried to take Jyotsna away from her, she says, she could not survive it. She cannot understand how Deepa could let go of her own child so easily. The speech is not an accusation. It is a mother’s incomprehension, spoken through grief.
Sivanarayana joins in from the other side — harder and more accusatory. Kanchana is suffering. Deepa may have another chance at children later, but she is behaving as if none of it matters.
Dasharath Clears the Room — and Carries His Secret Alone
Dasharath has been silent through all of it, and when he speaks, it is with an authority that stops the room. He tells everyone — firmly, loudly — that this is enough. No more words from anyone. Everyone out. Give them a moment to breathe and think.
The room empties.
Alone with Sumitra, Dasharath faces the full weight of what he is carrying. Sumitra speaks to him through tears — the baby must live, she says. That small life deserves to see this world. How did Deepa’s heart allow otherwise?
And in that moment, viewers understand what Dasharath cannot say aloud. The truth he holds — the truth nobody else in this episode knows — is that Deepa is not rejecting her child out of selfishness or convenience. She is sacrificing her unborn baby because if that child is born, Sumitra will die. The pregnancy and Sumitra’s condition are medically intertwined in a way Deepa and Karthik have chosen to keep from the family. Every accusation Jyotsna throws, every tear Sumitra sheds, every word Kanchana screams — they are all directed at a woman who is giving up her child to keep Sumitra alive.
Dasharath cannot tell Sumitra this. So he makes a promise instead: “I will try. That child living in this world — it is not only your wish. It is mine too.” He says it knowing the full cost of that promise.
Kanchana Shuts Her Son Out — Sridhar Issues a Challenge
Outside, Kanchana and Sridhar are sitting with their grief when Karthik approaches. He tells her his mother wants to speak with her. Kanchana turns her face away. She cannot look at him. Through tears she tells Sridhar: tell him not to come near her. What her son has done will take a long time to recover from. Karthik stands there and absorbs every word.
Sridhar is not finished. He looks at Karthik directly and speaks carefully: a decision this big does not come from nowhere. There is something Karthik and Deepa are not saying. Whatever that hidden reason is, Sridhar will find it. “Remember one thing,” he says as he leaves with Kanchana. “Your mother will not forgive you for this. Not for a long time.”
The Guru’s Warning — Death Is Closer Than Anyone Knows
Elsewhere, Dasharath has gone to a trusted astrologer, Deepa’s horoscope in hand. The guru studies it and his face changes. What he says shocks Dasharath completely: this person is currently standing at the threshold of death. Her own existence has become her enemy. The time she is walking through right now is like walking barefoot on thorns.
Dasharath asks if there is any way through this danger. The guru does not offer comfort. One danger follows her from outside, he says, like a shadow that will not leave. Another danger is already within her. And the scale of the threat, he tells Dasharath, is far larger than anything Dasharath has imagined. Dasharath breaks down. He leaves the guru’s presence barely holding himself together.
Karthik and Deepa — Alone With the Truth Between Them
The episode’s final scene belongs to Karthik and Deepa. Standing together outside, away from the family, Deepa tells him she cannot watch him be blamed for a decision she made. The need was hers. The consequences are landing on him. She is watching him stand in front of everyone as the villain, and it is tearing her apart.
Karthik steadies her. He says that people misunderstand because they do not know the full truth. They have chosen their position — and they must hold it. He reminds her, almost gently, that Kanchana is a woman who walked away from a husband the moment she believed he had betrayed her. A woman capable of that will not hesitate to walk away from a son either. They will have to endure whatever comes.
“Until the operation is done, we will face every humiliation and we will survive it. Nothing should happen to you — that is the only thing that matters to me.”
