One of Tamil cinema’s most beloved pairs could be reuniting on the big screen. According to sources, evergreen actress Shobana is currently in talks to play the heroine in Thalaivar 173, starring Superstar Rajinikanth. If confirmed, this will mark their fourth on-screen collaboration — and the first in 12 years, with fans already calling it the return of the iconic Thalapathi combo.
The Thalapathi Combo — A Legacy Worth Revisiting
Shobana and Rajinikanth share a screen history that Tamil cinema fans hold very close to their hearts. Their first collaboration was Siva (1989), followed by Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi (1991) — the landmark film that gave this pairing its legendary status. The chemistry they brought to Thalapathi remains a benchmark in Tamil cinema even today. Their third outing together was Kochadaiiyaan (2014), director Soundarya Rajinikanth’s ambitious animated feature, where Shobana was described as the “only choice” for her role.

That 2014 appearance was the last time fans saw them together. Twelve years later, if Thalaivar 173 comes through, the nostalgia factor alone will make this one of the most talked-about casting announcements in recent Tamil film history.
For Shobana personally, this would also mark a return to Tamil cinema after 12 years. The Padma Bhushan awardee and celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer has remained active in Malayalam cinema and on the stage, but a Tamil big-screen outing has been a long time coming for her massive fanbase in the state.
Thalaivar 173 — Everything We Know So Far
The film has been generating buzz for a while now, not just because of Rajinikanth’s involvement but also due to its interesting journey behind the scenes. Sundar C was originally attached to direct the project but exited due to creative differences over the script. Following his departure, Kamal Haasan — who is producing the film under his Raaj Kamal Films International banner along with R. Mahendran — shortlisted several young directors and arranged story narrations for Rajinikanth.
It was Cibi Chakravarthi’s narration that reportedly left the biggest impression on the Superstar. Cibi, who previously directed the hit college comedy Don (2022) starring Sivakarthikeyan and trained under Atlee during the making of Theri and Mersal, called his selection for Thalaivar 173 a “dream come true.” The script has since been officially locked, and the film is set to go on floors in mid-April 2026.

On the music front, Anirudh Ravichander is composing the score — his fifth major collaboration with Rajinikanth, a partnership that has consistently delivered blockbuster soundtracks. The film carries the tagline “Every Hero Has A Family,” hinting at a story rooted in emotional, family-driven drama rather than pure action spectacle.
Pongal 2027 — The Target
Thalaivar 173 is eyeing a Pongal 2027 theatrical release, which gives the production a solid timeline with the April 2026 shoot start. A Pongal release for a Rajinikanth film is always a cultural event in Tamil Nadu, and with Anirudh’s music, Cibi Chakravarthi’s fresh directorial vision, and now the potential return of Shobana, the anticipation is only going to grow.
