What Is Sinners About?

Set in 1932 Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, Sinners follows twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore — both played by Michael B. Jordan in a dual performance — who return to their hometown of Clarksdale after years spent with the Chicago mob. With money saved and a determination to build something legitimate, the brothers take over an abandoned sawmill and open a juke joint — a space built for music, community, and celebration.

What begins as a story of redemption and homecoming turns into something far darker. Before the night is over, a supernatural evil descends on the juke joint, threatening to consume everything the brothers have built and everyone they love. Sinners is simultaneously a period drama, a horror film, a music film, and a meditation on Black history in America — and it holds all of those elements together with rare skill.

The film is written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed), marking his first original blockbuster outside the Marvel universe. The ensemble cast alongside Michael B.
