Vijay Sethupathi Upcoming Movies 2026 and 2027: Complete List from Kaattaan to Maharaja 2

Vijay Sethupathi is heading into the most stacked phase of his career. With Gandhi Talks already on Amazon Prime Video as of March 6, the actor now has nine confirmed and announced projects in various stages of production, covering Tamil, Hindi and Telugu audiences, spanning a rural web series, a silent film sequel, a Rajinikanth reunion, a Mani Ratnam romantic film, and a Lokesh Kanagaraj spinoff. The directors lined up read like a who’s who of Indian cinema. Here is a complete look at every Vijay Sethupathi film and series coming next.

Muthu Engira Kaattaan — JioHotstar, March 27

The most immediate release on this list is Muthu Engira Kaattaan, a Tamil web series premiering on JioHotstar on March 27, 2026. The series is directed by Manikandan, known for Kadaisi Vivasayi, and marks Vijay Sethupathi’s debut as both lead actor and producer on a digital series. It is described as a rural action drama and will be available in seven languages on JioHotstar.

The collaboration between Manikandan, whose previous work dealt with the struggles of small-scale farmers, and Vijay Sethupathi, who has a consistent track record of choosing films with grounded social texture, makes Kaattaan one of the more anticipated OTT debuts for Tamil cinema this year.

Train — A Real-Time Thriller Set Entirely on a Moving Train

Train is directed by Mysskin and has AR Rahman composing the score. The film is set almost entirely aboard a moving train and plays out in near real time, which is a structural experiment that no Tamil mainstream thriller has attempted at this scale. The cast includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jayaram, and Shruti Haasan in key roles alongside Vijay Sethupathi.

Mysskin is also credited with writing the story. Train is in post-production and has been targeting a late 2026 theatrical release, though no confirmed date has been set yet.

Jailer 2 — Reuniting with Rajinikanth Under Director Nelson

Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian for the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster. Vijay Sethupathi has joined the cast in a significant role, stepping into a part that was originally being developed for a different star. The ensemble also includes Mohanlal and Mithun Chakraborty.

Nelson’s team was targeting a wrap by early 2026 and has been aiming for a Summer 2026 theatrical release, though no official date has been announced from the production side. Vijay Sethupathi and Rajinikanth previously shared the screen in Petta (2019), and Jailer 2 marks their return together under a different director.

Arasan — Vetrimaaran Expands the Vada Chennai Universe

Arasan is directed by Vetrimaaran and is set within the same fictional world as Vada Chennai. Silambarasan TR leads the film, with Vijay Sethupathi in a key supporting role alongside Samuthirakani. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander.

The film has been targeting a December 31, 2026 release, which would make it a New Year’s Eve theatrical event. Vetrimaaran’s crime dramas tend to be structurally dense and long in runtime, and given the Vada Chennai connection, expectations from the Tamil film industry are significantly high.

Slumdog – 33 Temple Road — Going Pan-India with Puri Jagannadh

Slumdog – 33 Temple Road is a multi-language action film directed by Telugu filmmaker Puri Jagannadh. The film revolves around themes of power, money and survival, and also stars Tabu and Samyuktha Menon. It is being positioned as a pan-India release and was targeting a 2026 theatrical window.

This marks Vijay Sethupathi’s first collaboration with Puri Jagannadh and is one of the few projects in his current pipeline that is not rooted in Tamil cinema specifically.

Rolex — The Lokesh Cinematic Universe Spinoff

Rolex is written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj as a spinoff of Vikram (2022), built around the character of the same name played by Suriya. Vijay Sethupathi will reprise his role as Santhanam, the character he played in Vikram, connecting this film directly to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe that also includes Kaithi, Leo and the upcoming Kaithi 2.

No production timeline or release window has been confirmed for Rolex yet, but it is one of the most anticipated LCU entries given both Suriya’s and Vijay Sethupathi’s presence in it.

Maharaja 2 — The Sequel Nithilan Chose Over Rajinikanth

Maharaja 2, directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, is confirmed to be in active development. Nithilan completed the script earlier this month and Vijay Sethupathi has called it exciting, asking the director to develop it further before production begins. The same producers from the first film, Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy, are attached.

What makes Maharaja 2 stand apart from the other projects on this list is that Nithilan turned down approaches from Rajinikanth, Dhanush and Nayanthara to return to this story. Maharaja (2024) earned approximately Rs 190 crore worldwide on a Rs 20 crore budget and became the most-watched Indian film on Netflix in 2024 with 18.6 million views. A theatrical release for the sequel is likely in 2027 at the earliest, with Netflix expected to handle the OTT rights based on the first film’s precedent.

Mani Ratnam Film with Sai Pallavi and AR Rahman

Vijay Sethupathi has confirmed a second collaboration with director Mani Ratnam, nine years after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2017). Sai Pallavi will play the female lead, marking her first film with both Mani Ratnam and Vijay Sethupathi. AR Rahman returns as composer, maintaining his decades-long partnership with Ratnam. The film is being produced under the Madras Talkies banner and is described as a romantic entertainer.

The project was expected to go on floors in 2026. No title or release date has been officially announced. The combination of Mani Ratnam directing, AR Rahman scoring, and Sai Pallavi opposite Vijay Sethupathi makes this among the most commercially anticipated unannounced Tamil films in the current pipeline.

Wikki6 — Father and Son, Same Love Interest, with Vignesh Shivan

Wikki6 is the sixth directorial venture of Vignesh Shivan and reunites him with both Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. Pradeep Ranganathan plays the other male lead. The film follows a father and son who are attracted to the same woman, told as an action comedy. Kamal Haasan is attached as producer.

The project is still in pre-production. No confirmed production timeline or release window has been shared publicly.
